Nicole N. (MS & HS Special Education)

This is my 8th year teaching all in an extremely rural district in a little village in Wisconsin. My favorite things to teach is life skills and those lessons are my students favorites as well. We have our own coffee business for the teachers every week and they all look forward to Fridays just for that. Due to being a small rural district, our budgets are small and much of what I buy comes out of pocket. Any support is very much appreciated. ♥️

DIY Outdoor Sensory Table

Okay you guys, I have been eyeing up a sensory table for Crue for months. Let’s just say they are not cheap. So, we decided we could DIY one ourselves. I was able to partner with True Value for this project and I got all the needed supplies there! It was a one stop shop and we complete it for under $100 and all during nap time!!

Supplies you will need:

-Three 1×4’s (I kind of wish we got 4, we would’ve added some trim to the sides)

-Two 6×4’s (this is optional, we used these to add a back to the table)

-your choice of stain color, I went with Minwax Dark Walnut

-wood screws

-Two 16 inch sterilite bins

-sand, toys, etc. for inside the bins

So I started off by staining all the boards, I like to always stain first and then make touch ups at the end I find it easier this way. After I stained the boards, Jake started with taking measurements. We decided to make the table about 21 inches tall-we measured another little table we have for him at home that was a good height. If you have older kiddos you might want to make it taller. He cut down the 1×4’s into 4 legs about 21 inches long.

Then he based the measurement for the length of the table off of the sterilite bins. The table is about 30 inches wide to accommodate both bins and the piece of wood in the middle. Jake attached 2 of the legs and the “top” of the table together and then did the same for the other side. Once he had both sides done we attached them together to form the base of the table.

We used part of the 1×4 as the divider between the two bins in the middle and it worked perfectly. The bins kind of sit on the lip of the wood. We used leftover 1×4’s to make 2 “handles” so the table is easy to move around.

Then we took the 6×4’s and made a back for the table, my plan is to add some hooks so he can hang any shovels, tools, toys, etc. All we did was use 2 leftover pieces of wood on the back of the 6×4’s to make it sturdy and then screwed that into the back of the table.

To finish up I made any touch ups with the stain and then added sand to one bin and water to the other. There are so many options for the sensory table, water breads, play doh, kinetic sand, etc. You can also put the lids to the bins back on, so everything inside stays safe from the weather if you are going to be keeping it outside. This project was so much cheaper than buying a sensory table and we were able to customize it to make it exactly what we wanted. Crue loves it already! If you want to see some videos of the process head to my instagram page to check out my reel.

Paint Colors

I get asked frequently about the paint colors in our home so I thought I would put all the info in one spot. All photos will have no filter on them so you are able to see the colors better. 99.9% of the paint in our house is Valspar from Lowes. Only one room (our laundry room) is not Valspar because it was leftover from my brother’s house, but we’ll talk about that later. Each paint color will take you to a link of the sample size for that color, the only one I couldn’t link was Notre Dame. I am going to start with all the rooms that are painted Ultra White by Valspar, you can buy this right off the shelf at Lowes. All our ceilings, doors, and trim is Ultra White as well.

So, the rooms that are Ultra White on the WALLS are, the kitchen, dining room, pantry, living room, and guest bathroom. I love Ultra White because it is exactly how it sounds, it is just the perfect white color, no tint or undertones to it.

Our master bedroom is a light grey called Frappe. I chose this color because it went perfectly with the stone wall. I came home with swatches and held them all up to the stone to decide which I liked the most. I would say Frappe has a bit of a tan tone to it, but definitely still grey.

In our office space/open room (we like to call it that because it oddly opens up into our upstairs hallway) is painted Madison White. This is the perfect color if you want your walls to give off a white tone but not be bright white. You almost can’t notice it isn’t bright white until it is right against Ultra White. You might be able to tell them when looking at the ceiling in this room vs. the walls.

The room I get asked about the MOST is our guest bedroom. It is called Almost Charcoal and it is the one room I decided to go a bit out of my comfort zone with because I knew I wouldn’t be in it much and I chose a deep moody color that would be great for a nursery one day. I hear that it comes off as a green tone in photos sometimes BUT in person it is a grey/navy blue.

Moving onto our half bathroom, the bottom shiplap is Ultra White and the rest of the walls are Granite Dust. It is the perfect grey if you ask me, not too light, not too dark. You will notice my entire house is either grey or white, and I will tell you why. When choosing colors for our 2,700 square foot house I made the decision to stay extremely neutral, I knew I would not want to paint for a very very long time. Because our home has all new drywall it all had to be primed (most of it 2 coats) and painted. So needless to say I wanted to pick colors that I knew I would love for a very long time.

My laundry room is the only room with paint that is not by Valspar. My brother had paint leftover from his house and since this room was fairly small I used what he had left. It is called Argos by Sherwin Williams. It is another great shade of grey.

In Jake’s hunting room we did Ultra White on 2 walls and Notre Dame on the other two, our master bathroom that is not finished yet will also be Notre Dame, it is a super light grey. This is the only one I couldn’t find a sample of to link.

You truly can’t go wrong with any of these colors I love them all and haven’t regretted any of them. People tried to convince me to stray away from pure white in so many of the rooms but I haven’t regretted it, you can always switch out your decor and accent colors. I hope this was helpful and if you ever have any question feel free to comment, or message me on my instagram @1900stonefarmhouse

Pantry Organization

Whether you have a large pantry, small pantry, or even no pantry at all and you use cabinets for storage, I have some amazing organization items to help keep your space neat and tidy. Our pantry is set up in an “L” shape with some shelves that we actually DIY’ed ourselves. All the products I am going to link for you are very budget friendly, I love that they even look cute!

I am going to start with my top shelf and work my way down, on our top shelf I keep a lot of our “dry” foods in glass containers. I like to keep my pasta and dry baking ingredients in canisters, specifically glass ones so I am able to see how much I have left. This helps me when I go grocery shopping as well, but also makes my pantry look more organized. I use THIS label maker to make all my embossed labels-I even use this for essential oils for any of my oily people out there! I found my glass canisters at Goodwill, but THESE are almost identical and are a great price for the set. I love to keep different types of pasta in them.

Next on my top shelf, in my all time favorite baskets, I keep Jake’s snack items that he takes in his lunch for work, and some items that I don’t use as much such as oats, bread crumbs, etc. THESE baskets are the best because they are stackable!! They also come in 2 sizes, you can stack either size on top of each other, I also use these on my bottom shelf, which I will talk more about.

On the middle shelf I use some of my Rae Dunn canisters and then I use THESE baskets to store all kinds of snacks and I also have a basket specifically for bathroom items-like tooth paste, contact solution, band aids, etc. I love these rattan baskets because they look nice, but still keep everything organized and neat. They also come in different sizes which works well for my shelves.

The bottom shelf is where I keep the things I use the most. I absolutely love THIS can rack, it was made for cans of veggies, but I actually use it for canned veggies and drink cans! It works perfectly to hold both, I have even stored bottles of soda on it as well! Then, I have more of my favorite baskets, I like to put the LARGER SIZE on the bottom with the SMALLER SIZE on top so I can put some taller things towards the front if I need to. I love to use these for sauces, chicken broth, seasoning packets, rice, basically anything and everything. I also found similar white stackable baskets HERE that work just as well as my black wire ones, they just don’t have the “cute” affect!

On the floor underneath all my shelves I use large rattan baskets to hold my paper products, like toilet paper and paper towels. THESE are some of my favorite baskets, I have these in my kitchen and absolutely love them. The ones I use in my pantry I found at TJ Maxx or Marshalls which is a perfect place to look for organizational baskets.

When I do a grocery trip and come home to unload everything I try to take this time to get the pantry reorganized and throw out anything that is expired or stale. This helps me keep everything organized and also lets me see if there is anything I need to pick up during my next grocery run. I hope these items help you organize your pantry or cabinet spaces, but if I had to suggest one item that has really helped me it would 100% be the black wire baskets, they are my all time favorite!

DIY Bedsheet Curtains

Yep. You read that right, bedsheet curtains. We were coming to the end of our renovations and I was finally at the point where I could begin decorating, I immediately became so overwhelmed with the amount of windows in our house. You don’t realize how much window treatments cost until you have to do it to about 20 windows, YIKES! So, I first went on the hunt to find budget friendly curtain rods that I loved. I ended up going with an industrial look, and found these amazing ones on amazon HERE.

Then, my next hurdle was finding curtains that were affordable but looked great. In our guest room I decided to change up the DIY drop cloth curtains that I have seen and try out bedsheets. I wanted white so the drop cloths were out of the question. So, I went to Walmart, bought $5 twin bedsheets and decided I was going to turn them into curtains. HERE are the bedsheets I bought, I got the arctic white, but another reason I love the bedsheets instead of drop cloths are that you can choose any color!

This is definitely a project you can do on your own, but I had the help of my mom and Jake’s grandma. While my mom ironed the sheets (I highly recommend this part because they are very wrinkly coming out of that small package.) Jake’s grandma and I started folding the top of the bedsheet down to the size we wanted. What is also great about this is you don’t have to sew anything!!! Depending on the length you want your curtain you can make your fold at the top smaller or bigger. We folded it the same amount all the way across and then I began putting the curtain ring clips at the top. I totally eyeballed this part and tried to just space them out evenly. The clips I used can be bought HERE.

Once you have your curtains folded down and clipped you are ready to put them onto your curtain rod and get them hung! I just love how light and airy they feel once they are up. I did 2 bedsheets per window, so basically it ended up being like 2 curtain panels. But the best part is it only cost me around $15 for the bedsheets and the curtain ring clips.

This was one of my favorite DIY’s, I loved how cheap and easy it was. If you use this DIY in your home I hope you love it as much as we do! PS if you made it this far thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading my very first blog post, your support means the world to me!
